One of my Chinese colleagues (~30) is heavily pregnant (6+ months). This is her first job after graduation. She joined our team last September and got pregnant, almost immediately, after joining the job. It seems that she waited to join the work before getting pregnant.
Btw, she is the same woman who came to office in the same dress from Mon to Fri.
In any case, she is still coming to office. I was just wondering why she didn’t take the maternity leave yet.
It turns out that there are two main reasons:
- Profession responsibilities- she has to finish “some” important work before going on leave. I don’t think it’s binding on her. I mean, if she requests to the boss, she would be granted maternity leave, I am quite sure of it. Then why she didn’t take the leave?
- Salary? It turns out that she won’t be paid full if she goes on maternity leave. One of my other colleagues informed me that although she won’t be fired for taking a maternity leave, she won’t be paid in full. In fact, she will receive only about 20% of her actual “per month” salary during the maternity leave of absence (she earns more than RMB 300,000/year).
Although I am not a legal expert, I was just wondering why the pregnant women are not paid full salary during the maternity leave period?
How is the situation in your country?
