Suddenly there are widespread talks of second wave of COVID-19 in China. The bus drivers are enforcing face masks. You are not allowed to get on the bus without a mask.

Well, while it for the last couple of months it seemed that China had gained control of the coronavirus outbreak and prevented a second COVID-19 wave from crashing over the country, an explosion of cases in the nation’s capital over the weekend now has everyone extremely alarmed.

Nearly 80 new cases have been reported in Beijing over the last four days including 36 on Monday morning (June 15, 2020). The majority of these cases are centered around the sprawling Xinfadi wholesale food market in Fengtai district, resembling the original COVID-19 outbreak which began from a Wuhan wet market to terrorize the entire world.

The Xinfadi market, the city’s largest market, has now been shut down. Nearby residential communities have been put into lockdown and all those who visited the market have been asked to step forward and be tested with employers instructed to make sure that all employees follow this directive.

On Sunday, more than 76,000 nucleic acid tests were conducted in Beijing with 59 people testing positive. The city had previously gone 55 days without a single new infection until last week when one new case was reported, then two, followed by dozens more.

According to Chinese state media, preliminary results from the Xinfadi market suggest that the virus strain came from Europe, though it’s not yet clear how the virus arrived.

Foreigners have been banned from entering China for months while Chinese nationals arriving back are held in isolation for two weeks before being allowed back in public.

Either way, this latest outbreak is not good news for those foreigners who were hoping that China would soon be opening back up its borders.
